The usual mayhem that accompanies flying with a 14-month-old greeted us on the Atlanta to San Francisco trip. My infant was obviously unhappy in the small flight compartment since she was cranky and crying. I could feel the other passengers judging me silently for not being able to calm her down. I did everything I could to calm her down, but nothing seemed to help, and anxiety twisted in my stomach.
I noticed a friendly-looking fellow seated across the aisle around an hour into the journey. He smiled warmly and said, “Would you like me to hold your baby for a little while? I understand how difficult it may be, as I have a daughter who is roughly the same age. I think I can calm her down, so let me take her for a little walk.
